Mitral valve disease occurs when mitral valve, also called the atrioventricular valve, does not close properly. This causes blood flow in the opposite direction as it is supposed to be in the left chambers of the heart. Patients may experience fatigue, irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath. Comparisons of normal mitral valve and diseased valves are illustrated in this infographic to show the structural changes. The infographic shown will be one part of a patient leaflet.
